Day 1: Hanoi – Thac Ba Lake (150 km, 5 hours)
Our epic adventure begins with a smooth departure from the bustling streets of Hanoi, taking the quieter dyke road past the Nhat Tan Bridge to escape the city’s congestion. As we ease into the countryside, the scenery transforms into a serene landscape of rice paddies, grazing water buffalo, and traditional farming villages. The ride offers a first glimpse of Vietnam’s rural beauty, with friendly locals waving as we pass.
We stop for lunch and then visit the Victory Monument, a site of historical significance, before continuing through the stunning tea plantations tended by the H’mong and Dzao ethnic communities. The winding roads offer a refreshing introduction to Northern Vietnam’s diverse landscapes, blending smooth tarmac with light off-road sections for an engaging ride.
By late afternoon, we arrive at Vu Linh village on the shores of Thac Ba Lake, a hidden gem known for its shimmering waters and surrounding green hills. Our hosts welcome us into their traditional homestay, where we settle in for a warm, home-cooked dinner. And for those feeling adventurous, there’s a chance to try the local “firewater” rice wine—but be warned, it’s stronger than it looks! With a breathtaking lake view and good company, we wind down our first day, gearing up for the adventures ahead.
-
Day 2: Thac Ba – Ha Giang (150 km, 5 hours)
As the sun rises over Thac Ba Lake, we fuel up with a hearty breakfast before setting off on our ride towards the northern frontier. Our first stop is Luc Yen, home to Vietnam’s famous gemstone market. Here, traders gather to showcase locally mined rubies, sapphires, and other precious stones, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s gemstone industry.
The road ahead winds through scenic valleys, lush tea fields, and dense forest plantations, creating the perfect blend of adventure and breathtaking scenery. As we pass through small villages, we get a taste of everyday life in the northern highlands—farmers tending their fields, children playing along the roadside, and the occasional curious water buffalo eyeing our bikes.
By afternoon, we reach Ha Giang, the gateway to Vietnam’s most dramatic landscapes. Our accommodation for the night is a peaceful hilltop retreat just outside the city, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. After a long but rewarding ride, we relax with an authentic Vietnamese barbecue dinner, sharing stories of the day’s ride and preparing for the awe-inspiring roads ahead. -
Day 3: Ha Giang – Dong Van (150 km, 5 hours)
After a restful night in Ha Giang, we gear up for what is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking riding days of the trip. The journey begins with a descent into Ha Giang City, before we dive into the dramatic karst landscapes that define this northern region.
Our first major challenge of the day is the Bac Sum Pass, a steep and winding ascent that offers plenty of photo opportunities along the way. Each turn reveals rugged limestone peaks and deep valleys, setting the stage for the epic scenery to come. As we continue, we ride towards the enchanting Fairy Mountains, named for their rounded, mystical shapes rising from the landscape like something out of a dream.
The journey then takes us through Sung La Valley, one of the most picturesque spots in Ha Giang. If you’re lucky enough to visit in November or December, you’ll be treated to fields of blooming triangle flowers, turning the valley into a sea of pink and purple. After a satisfying lunch in Yen Minh, we make our way to the Hmong King’s Palace, an architectural gem that provides insight into the region’s rich history.
By late afternoon, we roll into Dong Van, where our hotel offers a welcome chance to unwind. If the weather allows, a refreshing swim in the hotel pool is the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable day of riding through northern Vietnam’s most stunning landscapes. -
Day 4: Dong Van – Bao Lac (100 km, 4 hours)
Today’s ride takes us along one of Vietnam’s most legendary roads—Happiness Road, a route that truly lives up to its name. As we leave Dong Van, the road carves through the towering limestone mountains, leading us to the highlight of the day: the Ma Pi Leng Gorge. Often regarded as one of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Vietnam, this dramatic canyon plunges deep into the valley below, with the Nho Que River snaking through its depths. We take time to soak in the stunning views and, if you’re up for it, a quick detour offers the chance to experience Tu San Alley, the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia.
Descending from the mountains, we ride through the tiny town of Bao Lam, where the landscape begins to shift. Following the Gam River, the road winds past lush valleys and terraced rice fields, offering a stark yet beautiful contrast to the rugged karst formations of the morning. Along the way, we encounter a fascinating mix of ethnic communities, including the H’mong, Kinh, Tay, and Dzao people, each with their own unique traditions and colorful attire.
By afternoon, we roll into Bao Lac, a quiet town known for its diverse ethnic markets. Here, we settle into our hotel for the night, reflecting on the day’s incredible ride and the cultural richness we’ve experienced along the way. -
Day 5: Bao Lac – Ban Gioc (170 km, 6 hours)
Today’s ride is an absolute dream for adventure riders, taking us along the scenic China Border Road, where we’ll ride parallel to the Vietnamese-Chinese border for much of the day. The road is newly rebuilt, offering smooth tarmac, but it also challenges us with tight curves, sharp switchbacks, and breathtaking mountain passes.
One of the most thrilling sections is the Me Pia Pass, a 2.5 km stretch of road that winds up the mountainside in 14 steep, twisting levels, offering some of the most spectacular karst limestone views in northern Vietnam. We take our time here, stopping for photos and soaking in the dramatic landscapes before continuing toward Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, a UNESCO-recognized wonderland of towering peaks and deep valleys.
After lunch, we make a detour to God’s Eye Mountain, an iconic karst formation featuring a massive circular hole in its peak—one of the most surreal natural sights in Vietnam. From there, we visit Nguom Ngao Cave, a mystical limestone cavern where the murmuring underground streams sound like a tiger’s growl, adding an eerie yet captivating atmosphere to the experience.
By late afternoon, we reach our final stop: Ban Gioc Waterfall, an awe-inspiring 30-meter-high, 300-meter-wide cascade, which remains one of Vietnam’s most stunning yet least touristy natural wonders. We settle into our cozy homestay, unwinding with a traditional meal and reflecting on a day packed with adventure, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable roads. -
Day 6: Ban Gioc – Bac Son (180 km, 6 hours)
We begin our day with a final look at the smaller section of Ban Gioc Waterfall, a peaceful and less-visited part of this incredible natural wonder. After breakfast, we saddle up for another thrilling day of riding, heading southwest along the historic Highway 4—a route deeply embedded in Vietnam’s history.
As we ride, we pass through Dong Khe and That Khe, key battle sites from the First Indochina War, where the Viet Minh secured a decisive victory over French forces in 1950. The road is lined with historical remnants, and the mountainous landscape makes it easy to imagine the fierce battles that once took place here.
From here, the terrain begins to soften as we make our way down into the stunning Bac Son Valley. Unlike the dramatic karst formations of previous days, Bac Son is known for its rolling hills, lush rice paddies, and quiet rural charm. The sweeping views from the valley floor are nothing short of mesmerizing, especially in the late afternoon when the light casts long shadows over the patchwork of green fields.
Before reaching our homestay, we make one last stop at a fascinating cave, once used as a munitions storage site during Vietnam’s wars of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. This hidden gem offers an intriguing glimpse into the country’s wartime resilience and underground strategies.
As the day winds down, we settle into a cozy homestay, enjoying a home-cooked meal and the warm hospitality of our hosts—resting up for the final leg of our incredible northern Vietnam adventure. -
Day 7: Bac Son – Hanoi (150 km, 5 hours)
Our final day on the road begins with a misty morning ride through Bac Son Valley, soaking in the last glimpses of its rolling green hills and patchwork of rice fields. As we move south, the scenery transforms—workers dot the fields and hillsides, harvesting fruits like pomelo, custard apples, and plums, while others gather resin from the towering pine forests at higher altitudes.
We continue along the quiet backroads before eventually merging onto the main highway toward Hanoi. But before returning to the capital’s urban sprawl, we take a detour to a military airbase, where, if luck is on our side, we might catch a glimpse of Russian fighter jets stationed there—a unique and unexpected sight in the Vietnamese countryside.
With the final stretch ahead, we time our arrival back in Hanoi carefully, ensuring we avoid the chaotic evening rush hour. Rolling into the city, we reflect on the incredible landscapes, thrilling roads, and unforgettable cultural experiences we’ve encountered over the past week. After returning the bikes, we clean up and gather for a farewell dinner, sharing laughs, stories, and the memories of an adventure that will stay with us for a lifetime.
